I was watching "Mythbusters" yesterday on TV and saw a segment where they were trying to prove it was dangerous to slam to hammers together. In their test, they did not show the name of manufacturer of the hammers and tested the hammers incorrectly.

It seems to me that the show has reduced the floor space by at least 35%, and a lot of the big tool companies (SPX, Channellock, Stanley) are not here.

I often wonder how many criminalists actually watch cop shows like CSI or NCIS. People often tend to scoff at fiction that pretends to emulate what they know. It’s a question of where the suspension of disbelief kicks in. We look at what the characters are doing and go – “yea right!”

But, liberties aside, I enjoy detective and crime scene fiction, even when the science goes astray. Does the fact that warp drive doesn’t exist make Star Trek less enjoyable? No – and lets be honest, aside from the lighting, is there anyone out there who wouldn’t want Grissom’s lab?

As a product developer, I also have to admit I find a lot of fodder in fiction. While it’s true that the people who produce television forensic television shows or books based on criminalist characters try to add as much authentic science as then can, the pacing of the stories requires some liberties. Sometimes, I see that prop guys have devised easier delivery systems than the original manufacture had. Sometimes the writers have presented “real life” problems for which there is no off the shelf solution. And sometimes, you see a piece of evidence that can only be read by a really cool piece of equipment that most labs couldn’t hope to afford. And I wonder what I would do if confronted with the same problem.

And that I guess is the essence of research science. So, in this blob space, I plan to look at the developing and using of the tools that help us answer the question “how do I do that?”

The new refrigerant, R1234yf

By now, most have heard of the new refrigerant coming to North America, probably in 2011, R1234yf. I expect that we will see it in very limited release in 2011, then a complete rollout in 2012. Many are wondering, will their tools work with R1234yf?

Probably, but it is hard to tell. I am sure that all of the major leak detection and a/c tool companies are working hard to make sure their products will work with the new refrigerant. We will keep you posted with what we find.

How to choose the correct hammer for a job

When selecting a striking tool for a specific job, we used to call these hammers, three items should be considered: safety, efficiency and collateral damage.
Hammers are perhaps the most widely misused and abused of all hand tools. Many people just get a hammer, the larger the better, and make it fit.

Basic safety measures must be taken when using any type of striking tool. Safety glasses must be used in all cases. The size of the hammer head must be in proportion to the item being struck. The striking face of the hammer should be parallel to the surface of the item being struck.

Example #1
If you are using a hammer to strike another tool, such as a chisel, punch or wedge, you should have a face diameter larger than the face of the struck tool. Use a small (2 or 3 lb) hand drilling hammer when hitting a ½ punch or use the flat surface of a 32 oz ball peen.

Efficiency or speed is also important in choosing the proper striking tool. An undersized hammer can cause a job to go very slow. Also tiring the user.

Example #2
Sledge hammers are generally used is busting concrete or stone. You would most likely want to use a 10-20 lb sledge to do this job. Using an under sized 6 lb sledge could cause this job to take as much as 3 times as long. The length of the handle is also important when choosing a sledge hammer. Sledge hammer come with handle lengths from 14 to 36 inches. Normally long handled sledges are used with two hands when a great deal of striking power is needed.

It is important not to cause collateral damage to adjacent areas when using a striking tool. If you are using a hammer next to areas that can be damaged such as wood panel or tile it is important to use a soft face – dead bow hammer.

If you need to use a hammer to move a granitite counter top in place a soft face-dead blow hammer is idea. The soft head surface, normally made of rubber, nylon or urethane will prevent chipping of the granite. The dead blow design will absorb the energy (rebound) so that the hammer does not skip to another surface. The dead-blow also aids in reducing arm stress.

Using Engine Oil Dye properly

Every once in a while, we will get a call from a customer complaining that they have an engine or transmission oil leak and that our dye could not find it. They tell us that they poured the 1 ounce container into the vehicle, and nothing happened.

There is a reason for this. Quite often, if you put an ounce container into the fill tube, A LOT of the dye will be stuck to the sides of the tube! For best results, mix the dye into some oil and pour them in together. Since you have a leak, you need to put more oil in anyway!

Or you can pour the dye in, then follow up with some oil to wash the dye down. Then you will find the leak.

Don't Be Stranded With A Dead Battery!

I’m a good ‘ol boy from Western Kentucky. Over the years I’ve owned many cars and boats.

About three years ago I transferred up to Michigan for a new consulting job. Those Michigan winters can sure be brutal: snow, wind, ice and freezing cold, especially in January and February.

Last Fall I heard about an amazing new product from a friend of mine. It’s called the Battery Alert. I went out and bought one to place on my 2001 Plymouth Voyager. As it turned out, it saved my butt.

The Battery Alert is a little device that can fit easily in the palm of your hand and weighs just a couple of ounces. I attached it to my minivan’s battery with ease. All I needed was a way to loosen the nuts on the battery terminal and slide in the spades of the Battery Alert and then retighten the nuts again. This took all of about 1 minute. Anyone can do it. It comes with instructions but installation is intuitive. There is also a little plastic tie that fits onto the Battery Alert and allows one to tie the Battery Alert to the battery cables. So the Battery Alert can hang and is secured.

In any event, the Battery Alert acts as a little computer in a box to analyze your car battery. Every time you start your vehicle, it takes an analysis. Over time all batteries lose some juice and run down. It does not matter if you have a lead acid battery or one of those newer gel batteries. What this little battery analyzer does, is check to see how healthy your battery is every time you start your vehicle, boat, motorcycle, etc.

At some point, this little battery monitor reads that the battery will fail in the near future. It then emits this loud alarm for about 5 to 10 seconds and then shuts off. Well one fine mornin’ last February I heard this alarm go off. According to the manufacturer’s this meant that my battery was about to fail. Each time I started my van for the next day or two the alarm went off again. This meant it was time for me to have my battery checked. Well I was really busy and did not get the battery checked. About three days after the first alarm went off, it was a really cold morning. My van is always parked outside, even in winter. It barely started that morning. The Battery Alert alarmed again. I knew it was time to change my battery. I went off to my local auto parts store and bought a new lead acid battery.

I have since given one of these Battery Alerts to all of my kids, even though they live down south in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. I don’t want my kids to be stranded with a dead battery. If you have ever been stranded with a dead battery, you know what I am talking about. What’s interesting about all these 12-volt car batteries is the following: the heat will kill them more than the cold. But when you go to start in the cold, the battery will need more amps to start in the cold. So even though my kids all live in warm climates, they are as much as risk as anyone else.

I want my kids to have peace of mind. (Or is it really my peace of mind we are talking about?!). I don’t want to have to worry if my daughter Les gets stuck after work in a dark parking garage. I don’t want to worry if Al has a breakdown on I-75 in Atlanta or if Brent or his wife Lisa is out with my granddaughter around Nashville when a storm passes through.

Knowing that my kids all have the Battery Alert makes me feel like I took care of them real well. Call it battery insurance but this is one item I really like.
